What just changedAds in ChatGPT: what a small business should know.
4 minute read
Updated
ChatGPT now carries ads, and the tools to buy them are reaching ordinary businesses. Shopify launched a ChatGPT Ads app on 3 September 2026 and opened it to shops outside the United States on 23 September. HubSpot connects to ChatGPT ads as well. A newer format called Sponsored Agents is still a test with a small group of US advertisers.
Whether you buy ads there or not, the bigger change is this: people now ask ChatGPT which business to use, and arrive at yours with half the question already answered. What happens in the next few minutes decides whether they become a customer.
What is live today
It is early, and the formats are still changing.
- Shopify shops can run ChatGPT ads from the Shopify ChatGPT Ads app, launched on 3 September 2026 and opened to shops outside the US on 23 September.
- HubSpot users can connect ChatGPT ads to HubSpot.
- Sponsored Agents, a newer ad format, is a test limited to selected US advertisers.
Should you try it?
If you sell products on Shopify and can see which sales came from which ad, a small test is cheap to run and easy to judge. Set a budget you are happy to lose and look at sales, not clicks.
If you sell a local service, wait until you can see how the ads report calls and bookings. Clicks that never turn into a booking are the most expensive kind.
The part that decides whether any of it pays: the first reply
Someone arriving from ChatGPT is used to instant answers. If they land on a contact form and wait until tomorrow for a reply, most of what you paid to reach them is gone. Check these before you spend on any new ad channel:
- Questions on your website get answered at once, day and night.
- Visitors can book or buy without waiting for a call back.
- People who leave their details hear from you within the hour, not the next day.
Getting mentioned without paying
ChatGPT also names businesses in its normal answers, for free. Research on AI answers finds that how often a business is mentioned across the web matters far more than how many pages it publishes. Reviews, directory listings and mentions on sites your customers trust do more than a pile of new blog posts.
Our take
Test ChatGPT ads if you sell on Shopify and can measure sales. For most service businesses the better first spend is making sure the people who already find you, from ChatGPT or anywhere else, get an answer and a booking straight away.
That is the job our chatbots and receptionists do: answer at once, book straight into your calendar, and pass you the conversations that need a person.
Still not sure which applies to you?
Fifteen minutes on a call is usually enough to settle it, and we will tell you if the answer is something we do not sell.
