What just changedMeta's free AI for small business: what it does and where it stops.

Updated
Meta now has two AI tools for small businesses. Meta Business Agent, launched on 3 June 2026, answers your customers on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. Muse for Small Business, launched on 29 September 2026, is an assistant for the owner that connects to the tools a small business already runs.
If you are in the United States or Canada and most of your customers message you on Instagram or WhatsApp, try them before you pay anyone. That includes us.
Meta Business Agent: answers customers inside Meta's apps
It replies to customers on your behalf in WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram: answering questions, suggesting products, booking appointments and passing harder conversations to a person. Getting started is free, and Meta says more than a million businesses were already running one when it launched. Heavier use by larger businesses is paid.
Muse for Small Business: a helper for the owner
Meta describes Muse as free for most of what people need. It connects to tools including QuickBooks, Shopify, Stripe, Slack, Notion, Canva, Klaviyo, HighLevel, Zoom, Dropbox, Asana and Figma, as well as Facebook and Instagram. It is available in the United States and Canada only, and Meta says nothing publishes, sends or spends without your approval.
Where the free tools stop
None of this makes them bad tools. It makes them tools for part of the job.
- Channels. Business Agent works on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. Customers who phone, email or use the chat on your website need something that sits there too.
- Your own software. If your booking system, practice software or job management tool is not on Muse's list, it cannot see it.
- Where you operate. Muse is for the United States and Canada only.
- Waiting for you. Muse asks for your yes before it sends or spends anything. That is a safe default for an owner, and it also means the work waits until you are free.
- Whose account it is. The setup lives in Meta's accounts, on Meta's terms, which can change.
A simple way to decide
Match the tool to where your customers actually reach you.
- Most enquiries come through Instagram or WhatsApp, the questions are simple, and you are in the US or Canada: start with Meta's free tools.
- Enquiries also arrive by phone, email and your website: you need one system covering all of them, giving the same answers everywhere.
- The job needs your own software, has to run while you sleep, or cannot wait for your approval: that is a build.
Our take
Meta's tools are a real option now. For a small shop that lives on Instagram they may be all you need for a while, and we would rather you start there than pay for something you do not need yet.
When customers reach you in more places than Meta's apps, or the work has to happen inside your own systems without waiting for you, that is where a system built in your own accounts earns its cost. It can sit alongside Meta's tools rather than replace them.
